A torsion spring letting go
A broken torsion spring usually announces itself all at once: the door feels twice as heavy, or it won't lift past a few inches, or you hear a loud bang from the garage that turns out to be the spring letting go rather than something falling. That bang-in-cold-weather pattern is common enough here that it's often the first thing we ask about on the phone.
